Instagram DM automation for electronics retailers, from reel to checkout.

Cloodot’s Instagram DM automation for electronics retailers answers spec, stock and compatibility questions in the DM, from your Shopify store and product data. Comments like “price?” on a reel get a public reply and a private message, and anything that needs a person, like a trade-in or a price match, goes to your team with the thread intact.

Is the noise-canceling headset from your reel in stock in black?

Black is in stock, Megan.

It’s $279 today and charges over USB-C. Want a checkout link, or should I ask our Pearl District store about pickup?

What electronics DMs actually ask

A launch reel for a new pair of earbuds brings in two kinds of messages. The comments say “price?” and “link?” a few hundred times. The DMs are harder: will it work with my Pixel, is the black one back, does it come with the case, can I trade in my old pair, why does my order still say processing.

Electronics buyers ask precise questions because returns are a hassle and the wrong cable means a second trip. A social team answering by hand either pastes the product page into every reply or falls hours behind. On Instagram that delay has a cost: a business generally has 24 hours from the customer’s last message to reply freely, so a DM left over the weekend may be outside the window by Monday.

How Instagram DM automation for electronics retailers works

  1. Start with the comments. A workflow on the Instagram Comment Received trigger fires for each comment on your posts and reels. A Decision node checks the comment text for words like price, link or stock, then Reply to Instagram Comment posts a short public answer and DM an Instagram Commenter sends that person one private message. Instagram allows exactly one such DM per comment, within seven days of the comment, so the message should invite a reply rather than try to say everything.

  2. Once the customer writes back, the AI agent takes the DM. It searches your collections and shows matching products as cards, checks live price, stock and variants with the Shopify skill set, and sends a checkout link with Add to Cart & Checkout. Compatibility and spec questions come from your knowledge base, so upload the spec sheets and manuals you already have as PDFs, or add a web link to each product page.

  3. Order questions work differently on Instagram than on WhatsApp. Instagram doesn’t prove who the customer is, so the Shopify order lookup asks for the order number together with the email or phone used at checkout before it shares anything. Trade-ins, price matches and arrived-damaged complaints go to a person through handover conditions, and auto-assignment gives them to whoever is available.

What Cloodot does here

  • Instagram comment workflows

Reply to a comment publicly and send its author one private message, based on the words in the comment. Your Instagram channel needs comment access, which may mean reconnecting it.

    Explore Skills & workflows
  • Shopify skill set

Live stock, price and options for the exact model and color, a real cart, and a one-tap checkout link inside the DM.

  • Collections

Product cards with photos in the thread. Customers can say “the second one” and the agent knows which product they mean.

  • Knowledge base

Spec sheets, manuals and compatibility notes the agent answers from, including images in a text entry, which it can send with its reply.

    Explore AI agent
  • Labels with AI extraction

Tag DMs like “Trade-in” or “Price match” automatically, so the team can filter them and see what each launch actually brought in.

Setting up Instagram DMs for your store

6 steps

  1. Connect Instagram

Add your Instagram professional account under Settings → Organization → Channels, and reconnect it if comment access wasn’t granted the first time.

  2. Connect your catalog

Connect Shopify under Settings → Integrations, then install the Shopify skill set and enable it on the persona’s Skills tab.

  3. Load specs and compatibility

Add spec sheets, manuals and compatibility tables to the knowledge base as PDFs, or as web links to your product pages.

  4. Build the comment workflow

In Automations → Workflows, start from Instagram Comment Received, branch on the comment text, then add Reply to Instagram Comment and DM an Instagram Commenter.

  5. Write handover conditions

Hand over trade-ins, price matches, damaged deliveries and refund requests, and turn on auto-assignment so a teammate picks them up.

  6. Test before the next launch

Comment on a test post from a personal account, check the reply and DM arrive, and run a product conversation in the playground.

Who this is for

US electronics and accessories retailers that sell through Shopify and use Instagram for launches, restocks and creator content: phone accessories, audio, gaming gear, smart-home devices, camera kits. It fits a social team of one or two people who also cover the store’s other channels.

Retailers with a physical store, say a shop in Portland’s Pearl District or on South Congress in Austin, can keep pickup and repair questions with the local team through handover, while the agent handles specs and stock.

Instagram’s rules, and ours

  • Instagram sets the boundaries. Comment-to-DM is one message per comment within seven days; comments on a live broadcast can only get a DM while the stream is live; and free replies in a DM are generally limited to 24 hours after the customer’s last message. Staff so that handovers are picked up inside that window.
  • Live stock, carts and order lookups come from Shopify, so a store without Shopify relies on collections kept current by hand. The agent will not approve trade-in values or price matches; those stay a person’s call.

Questions teams ask

Is Instagram DM automation allowed by Instagram?

Yes, through Meta’s official messaging API, which is how Cloodot connects. Its rules come with it: replies within 24 hours of the customer’s last message, one private reply per comment within seven days, and no messaging people who haven’t contacted you. Automation that stays inside those rules is ordinary customer service.

Can it reply to comments on my reels?

Yes. A workflow on the Instagram Comment Received trigger can post a public reply under the comment and send the commenter one DM. Most stores use the public reply to say “sent you a DM” and keep prices and links in the private message, where the conversation can carry on.

Does it work without Shopify?

Partly. Without Shopify, product answers come from collections and the knowledge base, which you keep current yourself. Live stock, carts, checkout links and order lookups need the Shopify skill set and a connected Shopify store. Comment replies and handovers work either way.

How does it handle order status questions in DMs?

Instagram doesn’t verify a customer the way a phone number does, so the Shopify order lookup asks for the order number plus the email or phone used at checkout, and shares the order only when they match. If nothing matches, the agent says so and offers a person.

What does it cost to answer Instagram DMs?

Meta doesn’t charge per message for Instagram DMs the way it does for WhatsApp templates. Cloodot meters incoming messages against your plan, and the AI agent replies only while you have message credits. When credits run out, conversations stay open for your team to answer.

Can it hand a DM to someone in the store?

Yes. Create a team for the store with its team inbox on and a description of what it handles, and the agent routes pickup, demo and repair questions there when it hands over. The store team replies in the same DM, with the whole conversation above them.
