Shopify abandoned cart WhatsApp reminders that know when to stop.
Shopify abandoned cart WhatsApp reminders in Cloodot start from the Cart abandoned trigger: when a shopper leaves checkout without buying, a workflow sends an approved template with their items and a link that restores the checkout. A purchase on any device cancels the reminder, and when the shopper writes back, your AI agent answers in the same thread.

Why abandoned cart emails fall short
Most checkouts are abandoned for ordinary reasons: a shipping cost that appeared late, a size question nobody answered, a payment that timed out, a phone call. The shopper meant to come back. A reminder's job is to make coming back take one tap, and to answer whatever stopped them.
Email handles the first part, rarely the second: a reply to a cart email lands in a mailbox nobody watches. A WhatsApp reminder is read on the phone the shopper was checking out on, and when they answer "does this run small?", something should answer back while they still care.
The hard parts are not the message. They are timing, consent and stopping: not nudging someone who already bought on their laptop, not sending four reminders because they edited the checkout four times, and not messaging people who never agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp.
How to send Shopify abandoned cart WhatsApp reminders with Cloodot
The Shopify · Cart abandoned trigger watches checkouts where the shopper gave an email or phone. You set Fire after, from 15 minutes to 7 days. Every edit restarts the wait, so four edits still mean one reminder. A purchase, from that checkout or on another device with the same email or phone, cancels it, and only the shopper's latest checkout counts.
A Decision checks consent, using the SMS marketing opt-in Shopify records at checkout or a consent field of your own; a second checks that a phone number exists. Then Send WhatsApp Template sends their first name and items, with the recovery link on the button; it reopens their checkout with the items restored.
For a sequence, build one workflow per touch, say one hour and 24 hours. A purchase cancels every touch still waiting; a Delay chained after the send is not cancelled.
A reply is an ordinary conversation. With the Shopify skill set, the agent checks live stock and options for what they left, builds a fresh cart if they want something different, and hands back a one-tap checkout link.

Connect Shopify for checkout events
Use the custom app method with read_orders and protected customer data access to Phone, then click Re-run setup on the Shopify card.
Collect phone numbers earlier
In Shopify admin, set Settings → Checkout → Customer contact method to Phone number or email, so the number is saved before the address step.

Prepare the agent for replies
Enable Check Stock & Options and Add to Cart & Checkout on your persona, and add shipping and returns answers to the knowledge base.
What to check before you switch it on
- Not every abandoned checkout has a phone number. Shopify saves the email as soon as it's typed but the phone only with the delivery address, so a shopper who leaves early can only be reached by email. Keep email recovery running for them.
- Opt-in is your responsibility. Cart reminders are marketing messages under WhatsApp's rules, and Shopify's SMS marketing checkbox is a stand-in, not WhatsApp consent. Word your checkout consent so it names WhatsApp, or collect consent elsewhere and branch on that field.
- The Shopify App Store install doesn't receive checkout events yet. These reminders need the store connected through its own custom app with the read_orders scope.
Stores this suits
Shopify stores where most checkouts happen on a phone, and where the questions that stall a purchase repeat: fit, shade, delivery time, returns. Those are the carts a reply channel can actually win back.
Teams that already run email recovery and want a second touch on a channel shoppers read, without a separate tool that can't see the reply.
Marketing and support leads who share one view of the customer. The reminder, the reply and any handover sit in one thread next to the same shopper's earlier orders and support history.
Questions teams ask
Is an abandoned cart reminder a marketing or utility template?
Marketing. The shopper hasn't bought anything, so WhatsApp treats a cart reminder as promotional: submit the template in the Marketing category and send it only to people who opted in to WhatsApp messages from you. Marketing templates cost more per message than utility ones, and Meta may hold some back from people who already receive a lot of marketing messages.
How long should I wait before sending the reminder?
Cloodot lets you set anywhere from 15 minutes to 7 days, with 30 minutes as the default. An hour is a common first touch: long enough not to interrupt someone still deciding, short enough that the cart is fresh. Add a second workflow at around 24 hours for a follow-up. Every checkout edit restarts the timer, so nobody is nudged mid-edit.
Can the reminder include a discount code?
Yes, in the message text or on a Copy Code button, which holds a code of up to 15 characters. Shopify validates the code at checkout. If the shopper replies and the agent builds a new cart in chat, the Shopify skill set can apply a chat discount code you configure to every cart it creates. A discount keeps the message firmly in the marketing category.
What does the AI do when a shopper replies?
It treats the reply as a normal conversation. It answers from your knowledge base and, with the Shopify skill set, checks live stock and options, builds a cart and sends a checkout link. When a question is beyond it, such as a problem with an earlier order or a request for a person, it hands over to your team with the reason recorded.
Why do some reminder runs fail with no recipient?
The checkout had no phone number. Either the shopper left before the address step, your checkout doesn't require a phone, or your custom app lacks protected customer data access to phone numbers. Open the run, expand Trigger data and check the phone fields. Then add a Decision on the phone existing before the WhatsApp step, so those runs end cleanly.
