Does the Weekender bag come in olive? I need it by next Friday.

Replying in the DM

Olive is in stock. Standard shipping to Austin takes 3 to 5 business days, so ordering today gets it there in time. Want me to put one in a cart for you?

Why DTC brands lose sales in Instagram DMs

For a DTC brand, Instagram is the shop window and the DM is the fitting room. Someone sees a reel, taps through to the profile, and asks what the product page didn't answer: does it run true to size, is the olive more green or brown, will it reach Columbus by Friday, is the restock real.

Those messages arrive in bursts, after a drop or a creator mention, and many land after hours. An answer the next morning is often an answer to someone who has already bought something else. A "link in bio" auto-reply doesn't help, because the question was specific.

The other half of a DTC brand's DMs isn't pre-sales at all. "Where's my order?" and "can I change the address?" arrive in the same inbox, and answering them means finding the order, which Instagram doesn't do for you.

How Instagram DM automation for DTC brands works in Cloodot

  1. Connect your Instagram Business account and DMs land in the same inbox as WhatsApp, Messenger, web chat and email. Sync your catalog into a Collection, and the AI agent searches it and shows matching products in the DM as a carousel of cards with buttons.

  2. With the Shopify skill set installed, the agent stops guessing from that copy. Check Stock & Options reads live availability, price and variants for the product the shopper points at, even "the second one" from the cards. Add to Cart & Checkout builds a real Shopify cart and returns a one-tap checkout link, and View Cart and Change Cart handle "make it two". Fit, materials, shipping and returns answers come from your knowledge base.

  3. Workflows cover the moments around the DM. Instagram Comment Received fires when someone comments on a post or reel; the workflow can reply under the comment and DM the commenter once, the comment-to-DM pattern. Story Reply Received and Story Mention Received fire on story replies and mentions, and a Click-to-Instagram ad's details ride along on New Conversation, so ad leads can be greeted by the ad they came from.

  4. For order questions, the agent asks for the order number and the checkout email or phone, because Instagram doesn't identify the buyer the way a phone number does. With both, Check an Order returns status and tracking. Without them, it doesn't guess.

Brands this fits

US DTC brands on Shopify in apparel, beauty, home and accessories, where Instagram drives discovery and the questions are about fit, shade, ingredients and delivery dates.

Social and CX teams of a few people who share the DM inbox and lose evenings to the same ten questions after every launch. The agent answers those. The team keeps creator replies, collab conversations and the moments that need a human voice, like Alicia Reyes asking whether the gift will arrive before her sister's birthday.

Brands running creator content or Click-to-Instagram ads that want ad leads greeted by the ad they came from and routed to the right teammate.

Instagram's rules, and what the agent can't do

  • Instagram lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, and Cloodot works inside that window; it isn't a way to message followers who never wrote to you. The comment-to-DM step sends exactly one DM per comment within 7 days of it, and on a live broadcast only while the stream is live.
  • Comment triggers need comment access, so a channel connected before that permission existed must be reconnected to grant it. Order lookups in a DM need the order number plus the checkout email or phone. Account details, such as the saved address or contact info, can't be read or changed from Instagram; the agent says so and offers a person.
  • Checkout happens on your Shopify store. The agent builds the cart and hands over the link; it doesn't take payment in the DM.

How to set up Instagram DM automation for your store

5 steps

  1. Connect Instagram

Settings → Organization → Channels → Add Channel → Instagram, signed in as an admin of the Business or Creator account and its linked Facebook Page. Grant comment access.

  2. Bring in the catalog

Sync products into a Collection, with item descriptions that say who each product is for. That's what the agent searches.

  3. Install the Shopify skill set

Enter your shop domain, which is all stock and carts need, and enable the stock and cart skills on your persona.

  4. Build the comment-to-DM workflow

Trigger on Instagram Comment Received, add a Decision on the comment text, then Reply to Instagram Comment and DM an Instagram Commenter.

  5. Set handover conditions

Name the DMs a person must answer, such as collabs, wholesale and damaged orders, and point them at your social or CX team inbox.

Questions teams ask

Is Instagram DM automation allowed by Instagram?

Yes, through Meta's official messaging API, which is how Cloodot connects. The rules are about timing and consent: replies within 24 hours of the person's last message, and one private reply per comment within 7 days of it. Tools that message people who never contacted you, or scrape followers, are a different thing, and not what Cloodot does.

How does comment-to-DM work?

A workflow on the Instagram Comment Received trigger fires when someone comments on your post or reel. It can post a public reply under the comment and send the commenter one DM, which Instagram allows once per comment within 7 days. Branch on the comment text or on the post it was left on, so only comments that ask something get a DM.

Can customers check their order status in an Instagram DM?

Yes, with one extra step. Instagram doesn't identify a buyer the way a phone number does, so the agent asks for the order number and the email or phone used at checkout. If both match, it returns status and tracking. If not, it says no order matched and offers a person, without hinting at whose order it might be.

What happens to DMs the AI shouldn't answer?

They're handed over. Built-in conditions cover requests for a human, frustration and sensitive issues, and you add your own, such as collab or wholesale inquiries. The agent rates each handover's priority and, with team inboxes on, routes it to the team whose description fits. The conversation moves with its full history, so nobody asks the shopper to repeat themselves.
