A test drive request is the warmest message a showroom gets, and it rarely arrives in one piece. Arjun Menon writes at 9:40 p.m.: "Is the automatic available for a drive this weekend?" Before anyone can say yes, someone has to ask which variant, petrol or diesel, which showroom, which day, morning or evening, and whether he has his licence with him. That is five or six messages, and the first one does not get read until the next morning.
By then the buyer has often messaged the other dealer on the same road. The executive who finally replies is also on the floor with walk-ins, so the conversation runs in bursts across two days. Meanwhile the demo car for that variant sits at a different branch, and nobody notices until the customer is standing in the wrong showroom.
Shared WhatsApp numbers make it worse. Two executives answer the same lead, or each assumes the other did. There is no record of who booked what, so the manager cannot tell how many requests turned into drives and how many simply went quiet.
